The whole experience was wonderful. I mostly enjoyed the fact that we had a variety of activities over the 2 weeks. Also, academically we had the opportunity to go in depth over different topics of our subject of interest and that led to a better understanding and it successfully triggered our curiosity to learn more.

Cambridge Chemistry Summer School

Chemistry is undeniably one of the coolest subjects to study in the world, featuring experiments involving bunsen burners, acids, explosions and more. But, you might wonder, exciting as all of this is, how can all of this be applied to the real world? With the Cambridge Immerse summer Chemistry course, you can tackle this vital question.

Providing participants with an introduction to inorganic, organic, and biological chemistry at university level in an engaging and accessible way, the Cambridge Immerse Chemistry summer course covers topics including the principles of atomic and molecular structures, chemical bonds, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, acid-base and redox equilibrium, and catalysis. By highlighting illuminating connections between chemistry and various fields of biology, physics, and engineering, you will approach chemical theories and concepts in the context of real world applications, considering them in relation to the technologies of the future.

By enrolling in the Cambridge Immerse Chemistry course, you will not only strengthen your existing understanding of the subject, but you will also be introduced to more advanced topics and topics for discussion to prompt your intellectual curiosity and help you develop a true passion for the subject, preparing you for university level-study. Plus, whatever your current ability-level in Chemistry, thanks to Cambridge Immerse’s small class sizes, you will be both challenged and supported in carefully planned classes that emulate the unique Oxbridge system of tutor-student engagement and debate.

What will I be doing during the Cambridge Summer Chemistry Course?

thermodynamics

You will learn all about thermodynamics. Theromodynamics is a branch of physics concerned with heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work, but was later expanded to encompass the study of energy transfers in chemical reactions in 1840 by the German scientist Hess. During the session, you will get to grips with the 1st and 2nd thermodynamic principle laws, learning about the concepts of enthalpies and entropies of chemical reactions along the way and using the potent and addictive painkiller morphine as a case study.

Towards the end of the 19th century there was a feeling amongst many chemistry and physics communities that their scientific knowledge was nearly complete. It was universally accepted that the atom was the smallest and basic constituent of matter and that all physical and chemical behaviours could be explained by using classical Newtonian mechanics. However, soon after this, several vital discoveries and observations went against this status quo, leading to the introduction of quantum mechanics and relativity: theories that have paved the way for our modern understanding of the atom structure and constituents. This stimulating and important introductory topic will delve into the basis of our world, showing you that it’s not always as simple as it seems.

In this wide-ranging session, you will learn about topics such as oxidation-reduction (REDOX) reactions, transition metals, metals and crystal field theory, and the pioneering chemists that worked on them. For example, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin used X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of vitamin B12, for which she was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, spearheading the use of crystallography to solve the structure of complex molecules. In addition, you will also learn about Antoine Lavoisier (1743-94) who transformed our knowledge of REDOX reactions, and the English chemist Charles Bury who coined the term, ‘transition metals’. In this session, you will learn all about these fascinating metals which are involved in many chemical processes and can be found almost everywhere we go.

Scientists believe that the Earth was formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Its early atmosphere was probably formed from the gases given out by volcanoes, and it is believed that there was intense volcanic activity for the first billion years of the Earth’s existence. In contrast to today, the early atmosphere was probably mostly carbon dioxide with little or no oxygen. There were smaller proportions of water vapour, ammonia and methane. As the Earth cooled down, most of the water vapour condensed and formed the oceans. In this topic, you will learn about changes to the earth over time which have led to us living on a carbon based system and relying on carbon-based energies, looking at alternative, renewable sources of energy such as biofuels which can help our planet survive into the future. You will also learn how researchers are interested in developing new catalysts for removing harmful greenhouse gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, looking to nature – such as microbes which “live on” CO or CO2, utilizing enzymes with metal cofactors that facilitate carbon fixation reactions – for inspiration.

Participant Assessments

Throughout the summer programme, the Cambridge Immerse tutors will monitor student engagement with the topics that they have been taught. Once the programme has finished, the tutor will write a Participant Assessment that will evaluate how the participant responded to the materials they were introduced to, what progress they made during the sessions, and offer recommendations on how to most effectively advance participant's understanding and interest in the topics that have been explored. We strongly believe that our Participant Assessments are crucial element of the learning process, and reflective of our commitment to the highest standards of education.

Cambridge Immerse is committed to ensuring that students feel confident when applying for university. In order to support students in their pre-university journey, the Cambridge Immerse summer programme contains a University Application Preparation series including workshops, consultations, and mock tests. Below is an example of what students can expect.

Interview Skills Workshops (Optional)

Interviews are required as a part of the admissions process at leading universities. What makes a great interview? During the Cambridge Immerse Interview Skills Workshops, students will gain an insight into what a university interview might look like and enable them to better understand how to respond to challenging academic questions and articulate their viewpoints in a pressured environment. These workshops focus upon instilling participants with confidence and the intellectual tenacity required to tackle some of the key questions that might be asked during interview. University interviews are nerve-wracking for prospective university applicants, it is our aim to support students during their interview preparation and equip them with the skills required throughout - thinking, processing, and responding. For many of our participants, the opportunity to hone their interview technique has been a highlight of the programme.

The Interview Skills workshops are included within the programme fee, though attendance is optional.

Personal Statement Consultations (Optional)

Personal statements form the basis of any strong university application - an opportunity for applicants to position their achievements and ambitions in the best possible light. During their time in Cambridge, students will have the opportunity to develop drafts of their personal statements required for access to all UK universities and many others around the world. The Cambridge Immerse mentor team, who are all currently studying at Cambridge University, are on hand to provide students with one-to-one consultations, offering guidance on how students can best express their interest in a particular subject. The aim of these individual consultations is for students to craft a compelling personal statement that showcases their achievements and interest in a subject

The Personal Statement consultations are included within the programme fee, though attendance is optional.

Mock Tests

Certain subjects, such as Medicine and Law, require that prospective applicants to UK universities complete an aptitude test such as the LNAT (National Admissions Test for Law) , BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test), UKCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test). Optional sessions provide participants of Cambridge Immerse with guidance and insights into the best practices for preparing for these tests.

One of the most special elements about the programme, is the ability for students to truly immerse themselves in Cambridge student life by staying in a Cambridge University college during the summer. Cambridge Immerse takes place in four of Cambridge University’s most stunning and historic centrally located colleges: Queens’ College, Sidney Sussex College, Christ’s College and St Catharine’s College.

These are the actual accommodation that Cambridge University undergraduates reside in during term time! Corridors or staircases separate students by gender, and bathrooms are either en-suite or shared between just a few participants of the same gender. The wellbeing of our participants is one of our primary concerns, and the college site is secured and monitored 24/7, not only by Cambridge Immerse staff, but also by the college staff themselves.
