The Cambridge Immerse Creative Writing & English Literature course for 13-15 year olds is both challenging and engaging, with students learning in small groups to ensure that each student’s needs are addressed. Students are taught university-level topics in a way that is approachable and easy to understand, and the programme aims to improve each student’s creative writing capabilities and knowledge of English Literature.
The Cambridge Immerse Creative Writing & English Literature course is perfect for those with a love for writing and literature. The city of Cambridge has an unrivalled reputation as a literary centre, with a strong tradition of producing some of the world’s finest writers (John Milton, Christopher Marlowe and Oscar Wilde numbering among them). If you are serious about tapping into your creativity and improving your writing style, the Cambridge Immerse writing course is for you. Each step of the course introduces you to sure-fire techniques to modify your style and structure your writing, building skills, inventing narrative, and encouraging avid writers to pick up and refine new ideas in prose and verse.
Academic Content & Learning Objectives
The Cambridge Immerse Creative Writing side of the programme provides avid writers with the skills to turn their ideas in a work of art. This course introduces the key characteristics of creative writing which will benefit you as you build upon the talent you already possess. Tutors will offer constructive criticism and guidance on course assignments to ensure that you reap the rewards of studying on Cambridge Immerse.
By the end of the course, participants will have ben guided through the writing of their own novella – a side project that we believe is critical to creative literary exploration.
The Cambridge Immerse English Literature side of the programme combines practical analysis of language and form with a thorough grounding in the historical and cultural context of a variety of key texts. By introducing students to the significant developments in literary theory tutors will equip them with the tools to provide their own answers to questions that have been posed throughout the history of English. How do we define literature? How important is the canon? And what do we look for when we analyse literary texts?
The course considers these underlying themes alongside a rigorous introduction to the features of literary language. We aim to provide participants with a strong knowledge of the principle trends of writing in English, and develop their receptivity to technique and style, to enable them to approach texts critically. This course will introduce students to key concepts of literary study and scholarship by examining selected texts through the lens of particular critical approaches. The topics covered by this course will provide a solid foundation for future study of literature at university and give students the tools and knowledge to approach challenging texts with confidence.
Students' favourite experiences at Cambridge Summer School!
We offer participants a choice of a range of subjects, from the arts to the sciences. All the subjects taught at Cambridge Immerse are taught by tutors who are current or previous members of Oxford University or Cambridge University, and have tutored undergraduate students. Our rigorous vetting process ensures that all students are taught by tutors who are engaging and supportive – and most of all, enthusiastic to share their expertise.
Our philosophy is that our participants should be challenged with interesting academic concepts; whilst our tutors create a welcoming and supportive environment in which our participants feel comfortable and thrive.
Throughout the programme, our tutors monitor student engagement with the topics that they have been taught. After the programme, a Participant Assessment is written by the tutor, evaluating participant progress and also making recommendations on how to most effectively advance participant’s understanding and interest in the topics that have been explored.
